“国际空间站”(ISS)是目前世界上唯一在轨运行的空间站,由美国、俄罗斯、日本、加拿大和欧洲各国合作完成。“希望”号实验舱是ISS最庞大、最复杂的舱段之一,由舱内实验室、增压后勤舱、舱外实验平台、暴露后勤舱、机械臂及卫星间通信系统六部分组成,用航天飞机分3次发射后对接到ISS。1985年5月日本开始着手“希望”号实验舱的设计,经过20余年的努力,于2009年完成了在轨组装。从启一、应用概况2010年8月,日本宇宙开发战略本部做出2016-2020年继续参加ISS计划的决定。计划共分为四个阶段,第一阶段是2008年至2010年年中,第二阶段从2010年年中到2012年年末,第三阶段从2013年至2015年,第四阶段从2016年至2020年。图1给出了到2020年日本参与ISS计划各阶段的应用目标。

Figure 1 shows the target of Japan’s participation in all phases of ISS by 2020.
