The refractive index distribution and spectral characteristics of nine kinds of fiber gratings with different refractive index modulation are introduced. The mathematical models of various kinds of fiber gratings are established. Their advantages and disadvantages as well as their application characteristics are analyzed. The relationship between various kinds of fiber gratings is given and it is pointed out that the combination of two or more types of fiber gratings with single refractive index distribution will be the future trend.
