在紫檀博物馆参观时 ,馆长陈丽华女士指着一把扶手靠背椅让我试试 ,看能不能搬动。我腾空双手 ,运足了气 ,居然纹丝不动。这就是紫檀 ,其色如铁 ,其硬如铁 ,其重如铁 ,号称“木中之王”。一般的木头都能浮在水面 ,惟有紫檀 ,入水便沉底。1994年纽约索思比拍卖行出让一张清中期的中国传统红木桌 ,结果被美国一家博物馆以3545万美元的高价收购 ,按今天的汇率折算 ,将近三亿元人民币 ,顶了天也就是一张紫檀木八仙桌。而在陈丽华女士创办的中国紫檀博物馆里 ,以紫檀为主的传统家具和工艺品 ,大小近千件 ,其中200件为明清两代的收藏品 ,余皆近20多年来 ,陈女士出资出力出设计 ,大量仿制的清宫家具及工艺精品 ,随便举出哪一件 ,都可以说是价值连城。尤其是其规模 ,用明清古典家具研究专家王世襄先生的话说 ,超过了清乾隆大内造办处的贡作 ,“不是绝后 ,确是空前”。
