《文心雕龙》中有大量古代医学术语、概念以及借用医论的理论阐述,其《定势》之“势”亦在此之列。刘勰把文学作品比作人的生命体,并在类比思维基础上借助医论建构了生命体之“势”。“势”指由情、辞、气、意、宫商、朱紫等构成的生命体所显示出的一种整体效应、状况或特征,一种和谐健康之美以及在此基础上产生的活力、感染力、生新潜力。有刚柔、奇正、雅郑之势,有总一之势、兼势,有离势、讹势、怪势。鉴“势”之法是从望闻问切四诊法类比性发展而来的“六观”。
