他本姓顾,命运坎坷不平凡的艺术,源于不平凡的人生。1941年,刘振夏(本名顾振夏)出生在江西上饶附近的一个叫铅山的小山村;4岁时母亲因车祸遇难;9岁时父亲去了台湾,他随外祖父一家定居苏州,改姓刘。生活贫困,但他天性喜爱画画,曾卖冰棍、捡烟头以购买画具。跟着头戴“历史反革命”帽子的外祖父母生活,年幼的刘振夏心中一直充满着疑问:爸爸、妈妈去哪儿了?外婆和大姨妈很少向他提及妈妈,她们用尽一切爱抚来疼他,以替代他的妈妈。外婆保留着妈妈留下的唯一一张照片,在他30岁时才交给他,并讲了妈妈当年遇难的情况。而关于爸爸的疑问,直到几十年后收到大洋彼岸的来信时才有了答案:原来,他的父亲是国民党军官顾贯云(祝川),他的堂伯是抗战时期国民政 His own surname Gu, fate unpredictable art, from an extraordinary life.
