This article describes a microcomputer-based real-time programmable optical signal processing system. The system uses a magneto-optical spatial light modulator (MOSLM) and a liquid crystal light valve (LCLV) to perform a variety of complex optical operations such as image correlation, image subtraction and matrix multiplication. Its main advantages are programmable and real-time addressing capabilities. These properties are very important to the robot vision in the field of space automation. This article discusses the design requirements and recommendations for actually implementing such a system and has conducted some preliminary experiments aimed at demonstrating that such a system can be used for image correlation in optical pattern recognition, image subtraction in IC chip inspection, Matrix multiplication in light calculation.
