The Australian Atomic Energy Commission completed a laboratory test using sulfuric acid (H_2SO_5) instead of pyrolusite as an oxidant for leaching of uranium ore. Test results indicate that the use of monosulfuric acid as an oxidant reduces the acidity of leaching and the amount of lime needed to neutralize tailings waste fluids. There is no effect on the extraction rate of uranium. Subsequently, trials of the Nablik uranium metallurgical plant of Rand Mines Ltd.
