丝氨酸是制造抗结核菌的环丝氨酸(Cycloserine)及抗癌药物,二氯乙酰丝氨酸(N-dichloroacetyl-DL-serine)及许多生物化学制品的原料,也是生化研究,特别是蛋白质研究用的标准氨基酸之一。 丝氨酸的制备法很多,但其主要药品既昂贵又不易获得。本法采用工业废品,即蓖麻蚕丝的茧衣或丝胶为原料;用国产最便宜的磺化煤为离子交换剂做层析柱;用无机溶剂,即水及盐酸为洗脱剂。并且,其操作可以在室温下进行,因此免去了加温的麻烦。而其回收率可达80%左右。如果用家蚕丝胶为原料,可能更为有利,因为其中丝氨酸含量此蓖麻蚕的还高。
