在人类历史上曾经出现过“禁欲式的”宗教艺术,绘画一度沦为了宗教寓意的说教式的解说图,也出现过希腊哲人所提出的艺术模仿论和再现论,而以野兽派最为明显的标志,此后艺术家以其真实的脉搏跳动表达着他们真实的艺术情感,使艺术不再是宗教的工具,不再是自然的模仿,真正的源于自然,而超越自然了。卡西尔在其《人论》有过这样的论述:“我们在艺术中所感受到的不是哪种单纯的或单一的情感性质,而是生命本身的动态过程,是在相反的两极——欢乐与悲伤、希望与恐惧、狂喜与绝望之间的持续摆动过程。使我们的情感赋有审美形式,也就是把它们变为自由而积极的状态”。
