In May 1982, Prof. R.N White of Cornell University in the United States gave a lecture at Southwest Jiaotong University in China. It introduced the main points of the seismic design of bridges recently proposed by the United States. These points are based on a comprehensive analysis of the seismic experience of bridges in California, New Zealand and Japan. Professor White pointed out that these points are still in the recommended stage. According to the records, the collation and introduction are as follows: I. General provisions 1. This regulation applies to all newly-built road bridges with a span of 152 meters or less (the seismic design principle of railway bridges can also be handled with reference to these regulations); but for suspension bridges, cable-stayed bridges Arch bridges and open bridges should be handled according to other special regulations.
