To study the economic success of Japan, it is often easy for people to attribute achievements to the large group companies such as Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, and Toyota. However, these large group companies represent only the tops of Japan’s industrial icebergs. Japan has become an economic superpower, mainly as a result of the efforts of small and medium-sized companies. Ninety-five percent of Japanese companies are small companies with less than 50 million registered capital and less than 300 employees. However, these small companies employ 70% of Japan’s total industrial labor force, create 60% of the total industrial output value, and provide society with 50% of the total industrial output.
