In so many ways the past century has brought newadvents in China’s history and in the boundaries ofher people’s thought and daily practice.The May 4thMovement eighty years ago marked an early andimportant epoch in that cycle as the people strove tooverthrow the constraining beliefs of the imperialisticfeudalism that governed them.Its proponentspromulgated ideals formed from Marxist,democraticand scientific thought and their success altered China’spolitical landscape forever. After the ReformMovement and the preparation for the Revolution of1911,women’s emancipation was high on the agendaand had reached its peak by the time the May 4thMovement came into effect.They carried each othertowards new horizons.
