This study describes the holistic methodology of sustainable packaging design. The method studies the combined system of packaging and packaging products, from the manufacturer to the end consumer, from the extraction of raw materials to the life cycle of the waste phase. It contains a few indicators that fall into the following categories: environmental sustainability, distribution costs, product protection, market acceptance, and user friendliness. This method integrates several different analysis methods. It is used for packaging design and optimization of creative ideas, decision support and property files for existing packaging systems. This study describes the experience of a case study in the Norwegian food industry. Experience shows that this approach is comprehensive and gives a good overview of the features of the packaging solution. It allows for a quantitative comparison of different packaging solutions throughout the design process. This approach reduces the risk of implementing sub-optimal packaging solutions. Another benefit of this approach is working in cross-functional teams. One potential disadvantage is that the methods can be resource-intensive and data-intensive. This method can be used as a tool in packaging design that does not require the use of all methods and quantitative indicators to benefit. However, all the indicators and requirements should be evaluated and considered. In all cases, if important sustainability issues are not addressed, consideration should be given to the inclusion of additional indicators.
