中国空军成立之初要承担繁重的国土防空任务,战斗机在其整个建设中占据了极为重要的地位,而在较短时间内培训出足够数量的战斗机飞行员更是十分紧迫的任务。于是,作为训练战斗机飞行员的战斗教练机随之得到了快速发展,到20世纪80年代中期,中国已先后研制了歼教-1、5、6、7等4种型号、十几种改型的各类教练机,满足了海、空军不同时期的主力战斗机(如歼-5、歼-6、歼-7以及歼-8等不同机型)飞行员的训练要求。20世纪90年代后,伴随着空军装备建设的快速发展以及航空工业技术水平的提高,以引进的苏-27、苏-30MKK以及国产歼-11、歼-10、歼轰-7A为代表的第三代空中作战平台陆续入役,成为中国海、空军的主力机种。这些新一代作战平台无论从性能、人机界面、操纵品质、飞行特点以及作战使用方面都与中国海、空军此前装备使用的歼-6、歼-7、歼-8等第一、二代飞机有了本质区别,其飞行性能和技术都达到了很高的水平,对飞行员执行多种作战任务的能力也提出了更高的要求。而中国当时无论是训练体制还是教练机技术水平都无法满足训练大量急需的、能够驾驭新型作战飞机执行任务的飞行员的要求。因此,根据海、空军部队的实际需求,中国又研制成功了可以满足现代飞行训练和第三代作战平台性能要求的教练-8、教练-9“山鹰”以及L-15“猎鹰”等新一代教练机,基本上建立起了先进而完善的教练机装备体系,为中国军队现代作战能力的不断提高发挥了重要作用,同时也成为中国航空工业技术快速发展以及海、空军作战力量逐步完善的一个缩影。
