Not everybody in Britain has a garden （but most houses in Britain do）.If you don’t have one， you can grow house plants， perhaps by the window or in the bathroom where it is warm. And it’s easy to visit other people’s gardens！ Like many British people who have one， Bill Jones loves his garden.
Bill retired five years ago and now you’ll find him tidying the fallen leaves on cold afternoons in autumn and winter， getting everything ready in spring and cutting the grass in summer. Bill is always busy in his garden. He is almost seventy， but gardens are not only for elderly people-Bil’s grandson （who is ten） often likes to help him.
Bill lives in a village where most people look after their gardens carefully. They ll be delighted to tell you that the village has won a prize every year for the last four years and last year won a competition for the most beautiful gardens in the United Kingdom.
Bill grows beautiful red roses but he also grows vegetables and there are sometimes competitions for these too. Bill wants to win a prize for growing the biggest carrot， but it’s not easy. Britain’s biggest carrot is almost six metres long， so Bill will have to work hard if he wants to win！
