一澳门半岛三面环海,北面有一段200多米长的窄小地段与大陆相连,有诗人喻澳门为一枝伸向海面的莲花,接连大陆的窄小地段为莲茎。于是有人称澳门为“莲岛”。何厚铧出生于澳门,对澳门有一种深沉的爱恋。他曾说:“从先父到我这一代,我们两代人在澳门服务了大半个世纪,我的一切都是澳门人给的,我深切地了解到澳门的前途与全澳居民及我个人的前途息息相关,彼此融汇在一起。”何厚铧对澳门的爱,表现在关键时刻愿为澳门作出承担。
