Although magma mixing is an old concept that is applicable to many magmatic types, the petrological research has renewed interest in this theory in recent years because it explains the genesis of calc-alkaline magma and mid-oceanic basalts. There has been no experimental study of how these two magmas of different nature can be mixed to form homogeneous magmas of andesitic elements or to produce structures such as those found in banded dacite. To this end we conducted experiments. The results show that basaltic magmas are easily mixed by forced convection and banded dacite and homogeneous andesite can be formed in less than a few hours.
