关于长江“黄金水道”的运能潜力,从世界上一些大江大河的运能现状可以对比性地找到佐证:比长江通航里程短280公里的密西西比河目前的年货运量为10亿吨;全长仅有1320公里的莱茵河货运量则为长江干流运量的10倍。在制约长江航运的诸因中,有一个颇为遗憾的因素——桥梁争高限制,尤其是以南京长江大桥为代表的先行建设的部分桥梁,因净空高度设计标准偏低而对长江中下游航段造成的制约,早在2006年就曾因南京、重庆两大市长就“炸桥”与否的争论而备受关注。
