In Singapore, every newly married person can have her own home. This is the result of the “Home Ownership Scheme” started in the 1960s. In Singapore, where people are scarcer and resources for housing are limited, most people live in high-rise buildings. Such houses as Singaporeans are called “HDBs.” I used to live in a group room. It was a HDB building built in the 1980s. It was 25 storeys high. My classmate and I lived in a unit on the 22nd floor. There are 3 bedrooms, each about 10 square meters. There is a shower room, about 3 square meters. 1
