1919～1935年期間修建的鋁厂,每生产一吨鋁耗电25000度,后来的鋁厂降低到約20000度,1950年建的鋁厂则为17000度。目前法国兰曼詹和諾盖尔这两个鋁厂,每吨鋁耗电不超过14000度。美国西北部鋁厂,每生产一磅鋁用的电,价值1.9美分,而在美国俄亥俄河流域地区,則为3.6美分,但这一差数为氧化鋁的运費所抵銷。鋁厂的投資很高,每吨鋁約需700～800英磅。鋁生产成本(美分/磅)如下:
