There is growing interest in determining rock fracture toughness, and unfortunately there has been no unified specification of rock fracture toughness testing. This work used three kinds of specimens: beam, compact tensile and short rod tensile specimens to study rock fracture test problems. In the three-point bending and compact tensile test, the influence of pre-cracking on the measurement of fracture toughness was studied. The effect of incision depth ratio and ligament ratio was also studied. The short rod tensile test, which does not require pre-cracking of the specimen, is the most promising because it can use smaller specimens to obtain more reliable fracture toughness values and the test method is simple. This article compares the fracture toughness measured by the three kinds of samples and draws some useful conclusions.
