刘勰宗主儒学,非常鲜明地继承了《左传》“三不朽”的思想。他认为,立德应当处于绝对的、首当其冲的地位,其次立功,再次立言。但是,纵观刘勰一生,其主要活动是立言,其主要贡献也在立言。而且,如果没有《文心雕龙》这部书的精心撰写,刘勰也没有机会从政。因此,在刘勰看来,立言不但有助于立功,而且从某种意义上讲,立言就是立功。
