英语写作主要是考查学生的笔头交际能力，其要求为:一是表达的内容与文题相符，要点齐全；二是语言表达准确、清楚、联贯、得体。而高考英语写作最新评分细则中第五档（最好）要求，在词汇运用和语法结构、语言运用中“能应用较多的语法结构和词汇，有些许语言错误，但因尽力使用较复杂的结构或高级词汇所致”；在表达上“有效地使用了语句间的连接成分，使全文结构紧凑”。这样才能达到预期的写作目的。
新课程标准提到，英语写作是学习语言技能与“跨文化交际意识和能力”的切入点，考查形式可以是电子邮件、图文信息转换、实用性写作等，其长度控制在80—100词左右，复杂的句子结构与高级词汇的使用仍将是重要的平分标准。面对高中学生，尤其是对于已形成一定语用能力的高三学生来说，突破高考英语作文，是提高综合运用能力，并取得较好成绩的有效途径，在教学中可从以下方面入手：
一、课本及练习中出现的句型、从句是突破写作的一手材料
