This paper compares two Chinese versions of Song of Songs, which originated in the 1930s from Chinese background and translation skills, and their translators are Wu Shutian and Chen Mengjia respectively. The two translations come from very similar backgrounds, all based on decades of experience of reading the Bible as “literary” rather than religious texts. The two translators also share some common historical experiences, not only with the Hebrew Ben grew up and experienced the 19th century literary criticism launched by Zhou Zuoren and many others in the May 4th Movement which was inspired by positivism. However, their translation skills are very different. The article highlights the differences by analyzing the basic structure of the two translations, the use of register and poetic forms. In addition, the article holds that the two translations are based on the original version of Morden’s Modern Bible Reader. However, it is not quite clear how much of the structure they apply to the Song of Solomon is its own creation.
