The character contrast in the novel “The Light of August” can be divided into the explicit contrast and the implicit contrast with the presence and absence of the new image according to the contrast of characters. The dominant contrasts are the contrast between Lena and Joe, Lena and Joanna, Heitar, Lena and Joe. By explicit contrast, especially through Lena, Faulkner expresses his own critique of Puritanism and expresses his own conception of God. Implicit contrast mainly refers to the contrast between Joe and Jesus he implies, as well as the relationship between the Puritan God-Jesus relationship behind Joe and the Biblical God-Jesus relationship. Through the implicit contrast, Faulkner further criticized Puritanism’s dehumanization of human nature and also expressed his own understanding of God.
