Editor’s note: November 1999 will see the 10th anniversary of the death of Professor Yang Zhouhan, the late president of the Chinese Comparative Literature Association. In order to cherish the memory of this prominent scholar and one of the pioneering figures of contemporary China’s comparative literature who has helped this cause to be recognized by the international scholarship. As one of his colleagues, Gillespie, based on his own experience in getting along with Yang, recalls his contributions to the revival of China’s comparative literature studies in the New Period. Yue Daiyun, starting from interpreting Yang’s las English essay, tries to reveal his critical analysis of the longstanding Eurocentric doctrine running through international comparative literature circles. As one of his former graduate students, Zhang Longxi represents his former professor’s personality and scholarship by recollecting some past things; while Wang Ning’s essay tries to shed light on Yang’s ideas of cultural criticism on the basis of his research on a national literature. He has further pointed out that Yang was a pioneering critic dealing with foreign literature and his critical practice anticipated the rise of cultural criticism in contemporary China. Ths cluster of articles will undoubtedly illuminate us in our further study from differen angles on this pioneering scholar in contemporary China’s comparative literature studies.
