Like other Latin American countries, Argentina has gone through tortuous and arduous processes on the road to building a modernized nation. The choice of its modernization strategy shows different tendencies and characteristics at different periods because of the influence of the international environment and various domestic factors. The choice and determination of a modern strategy also fundamentally determine the course of the foreign relations in Argentina. After World War II, Argentina’s modernization strategy has experienced several major stages such as the import-substitution industrialization, neoliberal reform and the readjustment and exploration of the new century. Its foreign policy and external relations are also manifested at different stages as “third stand”, “peripheral realism” and multilateral diplomatic strategy based in Latin America, complementing the development of its modernization.
