Recently,Dr.Lou Zhiyong from Tsinghua University and collaborators reported their structural findings in Bunyamwera virus(BUNV)ribonucleoprotein complex(RNP)and revealed the molecular mechanism of the formation and function of BUNV RNP.Bunyaviruses constitute the largest RNA virus family and some of them are the causative agents for severe human infection diseases,e.g.Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus(CCHFV),Rift Valley fever virus(RVFV),Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus(SFTSV),BUNV,etc.Throughout the entire life cycle of bunyavirus,cRNA or viral genomic RNA is only present in the form of an RNP,which is composed of genomic RNA enwrapped by nucleoprotein(NP)that either serves as a template for RNA synthesis or is packaged in the virion.Therefore,RNP assembly is a critical step in-ssRNA virus replication.
