In 1978, the Great Wall Wine Company (formerly known as COFCO) succeeded in developing China’s first bottle of whole-juice dry red wine and exported its technology to the entire industry, opening the curtain of the development of China’s modern wine industry. By the early 1990s, the influx of imported wines and the use of Hong Kong distributors to promote them in the mainland market opened the first true eastward march. In 1994, the state introduced whole-juice wine production standards and abolished the production of half-juice wine. The trend of Chinese wine consumption shifted from half-juice to dry-type wine.
