这枚湖北省造“本省”光绪元宝库平七钱二分银元,是从安徽省五河县新集镇一位老人手里集得的。此钱带有明显的流通痕迹,一眼见之即为真品无疑。该银元老包桨,色泽古朴,自然温润,当为传世之物(图1)。据戴建兵、郭立彬著《钱币的专题收藏》第24页记载:“湖北银元局于光绪二十年(公元1894年)铸造的第一种银元,上面的文字是时任湖广总督张之洞亲书的。”张之洞将位于武汉三佛阁街的原守备署改建为湖北银元局,并仿造广东省第三版银元的式样铸造湖北省造光绪元宝,初铸造时银币背面龙图的左右两边刻“本省”二字,以示与外省区别,
