The United States and Russia intend to jointly carry out ice drifting tests on the stage of the South Pacific Ocean. Technicians from the United States and Russia will set up camps on the Antarctic ice floes and observe the relationship between ice and the oceans and the atmosphere while drifting for several months. The purpose of this project is to understand the effects of Antarctic ice on the atmosphere and oceans and help Predict the warming of the earth. The trial will start from February 1992 and the United States and Russia will each have 10 scientific workers participating. Flattened ice floes 1,600 meters long and about 800 meters wide were found at the Waddell Sea on the Antarctic side of South America, and were set up by helicopter landing. In the case of icebreaker, aircraft and satellite supplies, information, drifting to June and July. Arnold Gorton, a Columbia University professor who led the study, claimed that although the Former Soviet Union already had an ice-science camp in the Arctic, it was the first time in Antarctica.
