在大部分中国人的灵魂里,都斗争着一个贵族,一个游民;一个绅士,一个流氓。中国历代社会状况,正统的观点都会认为这个东方国度是在孔孟教化之下的“以仁为体,以礼为用”的礼仪之邦。在这个文明的社会里,优雅的儒学起着主导作用,睿智的佛家和道家成为人们恰当的精神生活补充,民众在“士农工商”的社会秩序和长幼尊卑的家族秩序下有序地生活——也正因为如此,中国还成为“亚洲价值”的摇篮。然而,这是否就是历史上中国社会的全部?显然不是。
