Ho Shui Fan, 52, known to his friends and neighbors as Ah Fan, owns the Blue Mountain Café at No. 8 On Chee Road, Tai Po, Hong Kong. WE arrived at the café at 3:00 pm as arranged, when the lunchtime rush was over. Ah Fan, busy at the counter, came forward to meet us. He had been up late the previous night entertaining a guest and looked tired and a little puffy-eyed. Ah Fan is normally at his café daily from 5:30 am to 12:00 am.His establishment has a floor space of 60 square meters. Its décor, that features Peking Opera masks, is a combination of Chinese and Western styles. The same applies to Ah Fan’s menu. He serves more than a dozen varieties of imported coffee and muffins, but the café’s Chinese delicacies are also popular, particularly its fried chicken wings.Ah Fan formerly worked as a labor contractor. When business was brisk, he contracted projects in both Hong Kong and Macao. “At that time I could earn tens of thousands dollars per day. I bought good cars, ate abalone and owned pedigree dogs...” recalls Ah Fan, almost unbelievingly.
