A small piece of Argentine wild corn can help farmers deal with the European corn borer, which causes an annual loss of 350 million U.S. maize. This wild corn produces a chemical in its own leaves that inhibits the oviposition of the female corn borer. Farmers often use larvicides to deal with the corn borer. Newer genetically modified varieties are capable of producing Bt toxins (derived from Bacillus thuringiensis) and preventing the corn borer larvae.
