由于压力容器工作压力不断增加,客观上要求采用高强钢来制造压力容器封头。因此,对于无法进行冷加工成形的压力容器用厚钢板、不得不推荐使用调质高强钢作为封头材料。采用热成形与热处理工艺制造调质钢压力容器封头,在确定其最佳制造工艺技术的过程中,作者选用了公称屈服强度63公斤力/毫米~2级3Ni-Cr-Mo钢。这种钢日本防卫厅命名为NS63。作者曾进行了大量试验,制造了一个半椭球形封头模拟实体,最后又检验了模拟实体的机械性能和尺寸变化情况。通过这些研究工作,作者确认,采用现有设备、热成形工艺和热处理方法,选用63公斤力/毫米~2级高强钢可以达到早先根据120,90和46公斤力/毫米~2级高强钢试验结果提出的设计要求。
