Fiber technology provides a new medium for transmitting video signals. Compared with the coaxial cable, the optical fiber has some advantages: Broadband without the need for equalization; eliminates RFI, crosstalk and ground loops; low attenuation; small size and light weight. This article evaluates analog fiber optic lines that transmit baseband video signals over a single fiber. We found that if a fiber with an attenuation of 5 dB / km is used, a studio-quality signal-to-noise ratio is obtained up to 2.2 km of length. Linear distortion and non-linear distortion measurements have been performed and compared with commercial one-way broadcast standards. With the exception of a slightly lower chroma / brightness gain ratio, all the distortion is within the standard. This distortion can be corrected by improving the optical receiver electronics. We also found that the differential gain and the differential phase distortion increase linearly with the modulation factor of the light emitting diode, but both are within the network standard when the modulation factor is ≤0.5.
