Organic chemists have been seeking new ways to achieve chemical reactions. Occasionally, we find some new ways. Now R. Herges and C.Hock, Erlangen-Nurnberg University, Germany, can use computer programs to generate and screen new methods for the synthesis of dienes to ensure that no possibility is overlooked. Detailed results published in the February 7 this year’s Science magazine. They used computers to examine 72 possibilities for seven atoms and eight electrons.
