The article explores the translation of the tea culture in A Dream of Red Mansions from the perspective of functionalist teleology. Based on the English versions of A Dream of Red Mansions by Yang Hsien-yi and Hawkes, the author compares the translations to find that the purpose of the translation is to decide on the translation strategy, and any daring changes are acceptable as long as they are subject to the purpose of the law. From this perspective, Halliday aims to bring more reading pleasure to western readers. He applies naturalization strategies to meet the needs of the recipient. Such a change has reached the translator’s translation goal and is a successful example of literary translation.
