Economic Situation and Market Analysis Since the end of the Gulf War, a large number of foreign contracting companies have gradually entered the Iranian market. The number of Chinese companies currently operating in Iran has increased from two or three before 1990 to more than a dozen now. In addition, there are some Chinese companies that have not yet set up offices but have already undertaken contracted projects. Great Western companies such as Germany, Italy, Austria, Japan, and South Korea have also stepped up their economic cooperation with Iran and are leading the way in some major industrial and mining projects such as steel, railways, and hydropower stations. Contracting companies in the Eastern European countries such as the Commonwealth of Independent States, the former Yugoslavia, Poland, and the Czech Republic are now entering the Iranian contracting market with their price, geographical, and cultural traditions, forming a major threat to Chinese contracting companies.
