Chen Julai (1904 -1984) is an accomplished seal carver,calligrapher,painter and poet in the 20th century.Born in Pinghu,Zhejiang Province,Chen Julai permanently lived in Shanghai throughout his lifetime.His father was an official serving the Qing state.Chen began to learn seal carving under the guidance of famous calligrapher Tao Xiruo.In 1924,he became a pupil of Shanghai-based renowned calligrapher Zhao Shuru.In 1926,he got to know master calligrapher Wu Hufan.He borrowed from Wu 12 ancient rare calligraphy copies and carefully studied these masterpieces.Later he had Chen Julai (1904 -1984) is an accomplished seal carver, calligrapher, painter and poet in the 20th century.
