衣裳一词,在我国古代,不仅指衣服和帽子,而且指中原民族的礼仪文明制度,所以春秋十一次衣裳之会,全是中原文明之国参加,边鄙之国如秦、楚、吴、越、燕、晋等国,都没有资格参加这样的会。因此,衣裳之会,不妨叫做文明之会。与衣裳之会并行相称是兵车之会,这是一种武装示威大会,其参加者,仍然都是中原文明之国的代表,没有那些边远少数民族的代表参加。因此,兵车之会仍是文明国家大会,不过染上了一点武力威胁性质而已。至于白衣之会,那是死丧之会,中原文明之国、边鄙夷狄之邦均会逢此丧会。
