上世纪五十年代以来,《杨门女将》是一出少见的久演于舞台、又被戏曲院校用作教学的大型新编京剧剧目。王晶华首演的佘太君形象深入人心,其区别于以往各剧佘太君形象及老旦行角色舞台形象,开拓性的丰富了京剧老旦行当人物的扮演。全剧表演重点主要是在“寿堂惊变”、“灵堂请缨”、“决策赠马”三重点场次,和“校场比武”、“边关会阵”、“歼敌获胜”等次要场次,创造性的精当运用传统老旦行当唱、念、做的技术技巧,极具个性的表达了人物机深智远、忠义壮烈、慈祥仁厚的精神特质与情怀。
