Objective: To explore the possible mechanism of the maintenance of outer hair cells morphology and degeneration. Methods: Under inverted phase contrast microscope, the outer hair cells isolated by acute enzyme were observed for 6 hours. Results: More than half of the well-behaved isolated human hair cells maintained an average activity of about 6 h, with a longitudinal pleat line extending from the epidermis to the basement during degeneration. Calcium-containing and calcium-free cells maintained the same activity time. Static ciliary deficiencies can also be maintained for longer periods of activity. CONCLUSION: Ca2 + concentration and static cilia injury are not the decisive factors of degeneration of outer hair cells, and some elastic mechanism on the surface of ring cells may be the fundamental reason for maintaining the morphological retention activity.
