Researchers at Philips Research Labs in Red Hill, UK, have conducted three independent experiments in the past few years and have developed experimental monolithic radio paging receivers with only 11 external components. The Vhf pocket bell is mounted on a coin-operated pull-plate. The printed board area is about 1/5 of that of most commercial pocket bells. The four-member wireless trial unit is in its fifth year of work, making it the first time to make a wireless pager using direct-frequency conversion.
