河南地处中原腹地,是国家公路交通的枢纽。1994年12月,郑州到开封高速公路顺利建成通车,结束了河南无高速公路的历史。目前以郑州为中心,东南西北四面辐射八方通达的“米”字型高速交通网络正在形成,截止2001年12月,河南省的高速公路突破了1000公里,达到1075公里,高速公路通车总里程由全国第13位跃居全国第6位。2002年,河南高速公路建设将完成投资60亿元。具体到高速公路机电系统的建设来说,由于历史及融资等原因,河南在这方面的建设步伐一直滞后于兄弟省份,这是一个整体滞后。在河南交通工程的建设上还有一个局部的滞后,那就是交通工程的建设往往是在通车之后才开始考虑,所以大都滞后于主体工程2~3年。
