This paper studied the combined effects of SO 2 and HF on the yield and quality of wheat and barley. The SO 2 concentrations were 130 and 267 μg m -3, and the HF concentrations were 0.03 and 0.38 μg m -3, respectively. Experiments were conducted in open top barrels for 90 days. At the concentrations used, SO 2 has a greater effect than HF. A notable feature of all reactions is the compensation effect. Although SO 2 reduced the shoot weight of wheat, the treatments did not affect the yield. SO 2 promoted the growth of barley, increased the yield, and both SO 2 and HF increased the grain protein content. The effects of SO 2 and HF mixtures are more complex but are generally confrontational. The addition of HF counteracts the effects of SO 2 alone.
