The staggered spondaic word test (SSW test) is the most commonly used method of checking the central hearing function. The check was made with 40 pairs of Youngsian words so that the second syllable heard by one ear overlaps with the first syllable heard by the other ear; the following four conditions result: no competitor on the right, competing on the right, left Competition, and no competitor on the left. This article examines 41 elderly people aged 60 to 79 years. Their pure tone average hearing threshold, language acceptance threshold are in the normal range. Compared with the younger people, the SSW response of the elderly is low in accuracy and changeable. The authors agree with Brunt that although SSW is diagnostic of changes in the central auditory nervous system, it is not possible to identify senile central auditory nerve
