据《后汉书》载,号称伏波将军的东汉大将马援,奉旨平定了南疆叛乱后,凯旋归来时带回一车薏苡子,声称该子实可轻身省欲、以胜瘴气。当时有一些嫉贤害能的小人诬告马援搜刮了大量珠宝私自收藏,马援闻说后当众将薏苡子倒入漓江,使谣言不攻自破。后人为了纪念这位清廉奉公的将领,便把这里的山称为伏波山,山中的洞叫作还珠洞,薏苡也就获得了薏珠子的美称了。
