In 1983, the effective irrigated area in the country was expanded to 720 million mu (a figure of 670 million mu by National Bureau of Statistics of China), accounting for 49% of the total arable land. According to the agricultural population, each person occupies an average of 0.87 mu. In 1983, the country’s actual irrigated area was 590 million mu, accounting for 81% of the effective irrigated area, down from the previous years (up from 86% in 1978 and 1979). The utilization of provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) is not balanced. Effective irrigated area in Xinjiang all played a role, and Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Ningxia, Hunan, Beijing and Hebei provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities)
