It has long been an open secret that the Eisenhower administration is accustomed to using the offices of foreign ambassadors to pay the big players who donated electioneering funds. Since January this year, among the ambassadors appointed by it, there are six non-professional diplomats who have donated money during the campaign. Maxwell Gerak, the new ambassador to Ceylon, who was released in early July, is a big Ohio businessman who is known for his women’s apparel business and has a thriving business in many big cities. Although highly qualified to do business, he did not have enough knowledge to be ambassador to Ceylon. Apparently he was appointed, apparently only because he had donated tens of thousands of U.S. dollars in the past two Republican campaign.
